The
South African Rat Fan Club does not support the breeding of rats for
the purposes of being fed to any other animal unless the breeding of
the animals in question is strictly controlled in accordance with
the codes of conduct and minimum standards as endorsed by the
N.S.P.C.A. We are aware of only a few legitimate breeders of
exotic (and local) rat varieties being sold as pets.
We
would like to make you aware that the breeding of rats is a very
specialised field. Rats have very special needs as far as their
dietary, environmental and social needs go and they require special
bedding, cage sizes, environments and medicines. Anyone wanting
to breed rats should think it through very careully and should contact
any of the local breeders mentioned on our links page or contact
Annalie who has written this article directly, before proceeding to
breed. There are very specific minimum requirements that need to
be constantly met and you will need a proper support network (should
you need help in rehoming or for finding information and support).
Breeding rats and keeping rats as pets is not cheap. Annalie from
Aurora rats is an ethical breeder and has a great deal of expertise in
thie field. If you would like to contact Annalie, she can be
contacted at Aurora rats or through us at The S.A. Rat Fan Club. The other ethical breeders appear on our links list here.
